Jan Williams (1533-88), married Aagt Pieters in 1589 and was the father of 4 sons and 5 daughters. In 1557 after the separation of the Waterlanders he was chosen elder by the stricter party and ordained by Dirk Philips. He lived in Hoorn, where he and Lubbert Gerritsz (after 1559) were influential leaders. He was one of the arbitrators of the dissension in Franeker in 1567, which led to the division between the Frisians and the Flemish. As a member of the Frisian group he continually strove for peace, one result of his efforts being the agreement of Humster in 1574. He was the progenitor of the Sleutel family.
