Hendrik Beverts (Groote Hendrick, or Henric van Deventer), an Anabaptist martyr, by trade a goldsmith or silversmith, was burned at the stake at Antwerp on 1 September 1551, together with Jeronimus Segersz, who wrote a letter to him in prison while he was also a prisoner. He experienced "much severe torment and examination on the rack," but could not be deflected from his faith. Unafraid, he approached the stake to which he was then tied to be burned.
