Carolus Gallus, a Dutch Roman Catholic priest at [[Deventer (Overijssel, Netherlands)|Deventer]], then Reformed pastor, was deposed as priest in 1561 for heresy, at the request of Count Johan of Nassau. Gallus undertook the task of introducing the Reformation in [[Gelderland (Netherlands)|Gelderland]] in 1578. He was appointed professor of theology in the University of Leiden. Released from his position in 1592, he became a Reformed preacher at Oldenbroek, where he died. He was a violent antagonist of [[Anabaptism|Anabaptism]]. Two of his writings bear witness of this: (1) <em>Lehre des Christelicken geloovens in veer boecken tegen den wedertöpern erdommen </em>(Bremen, 1577); and (2) <em>Malleus anabaptistarum.
