Michael Weisse, a native of Silesia, Germany. He was a [[Roman Catholic Church|Roman Catholic]] priest who in 1531 became a minister of the [[Moravian Church|Moravian Brethren]] in [[Moravia (Czech Republic)|Moravia]]. He occupies a position of honor in the history of German [[Hymnology (1989)|hymnology]] by his hymnal, <em>Ein New Gesangbuchlen</em>. Five hymns of this hymnal also appear in the second part of the <em>[[Ausbund|Ausbund]]</em>, first printed in 1583, where four of them are attributed to [[Anabaptism|Anabaptists]] and one to John Hus. These five hymns are: "Als Christus mit seinr waren lehr," by [[Sattler, Michael (d. 1527)|Michael Sattler]] (<em>Ausbund</em>, No. 46); "Du glaubigs hertz, so benedey," by Walpurga von Pappenheim (<em>Ausbund</em>, No. 409); "O Jesu, der du sehlig machst," by Lorentz Ringmacher (<em>Ausbund</em>, No. 407); "O Gott Schöpffer, Heilger Geist," by Christof Bifel (<em>Ausbund</em>, No. 274); and "Jesus Christus Gottes Sohn," by John Hus (<em>Ausbund</em>, No. 216). Wolkan, however, considers all these attributions erroneous, and says that all five of these hymns were written by Weisse. These songs are also found in Wackernagel, <em>Kirchenlied</em> III, Nos. 405, 334, 386, 320, 318.
