Klopfenstein was an Amish Mennonite family originally from Switzerland. In the 18th century some members of this family were found in the Normanvillars congregation in Alsace, where Peter Klopfenstein was a preacher in the early 18th century. In the 1830s, when most Mennonites left Normanvillars for the United States, most of the Klopfenstein family remained. They gradually left the Mennonite church. J. Klopfenstein was the editor of an almanac for Mennonite farmers, l'Anabaptiste ou le Cultivateur par experience, on the title page of which is found a curious picture of a Swiss Mennonite farmer in ancient costume with a plow, published at Belfort, France, 1812-1821.
