Hoekstra is the name of two Mennonite families in the Netherlands, many members of which have served as preachers. The ancestor of the one family was Sytse Benedictus Hoekstra (1698-1768), whose biography and descendants are given in the article under his name. Important members of the other Hoekstra family were Freerk (1760-1837), and his grandson Johannes (1836-1908), preacher at Middelstum (1861-1874) and Wolvega (1874-1879), where he promoted the restoration of the meetinghouse and dedicated it in 1875. In 1879 he retired to Apeldoorn where he organized a chapter of the Nederlandsch Protestantenbond  and shared in the founding of the Mennonite congregation.
