Hans Lüthi. a Mennonite preacher of Schaufelbühl near Sumiswald, in the Emmental, Switzerland, was shipped to the galleys with four other Mennonites in 1714 at the age of 54. Because they had frequently been banished, but kept returning home, and because they spread Mennonite doctrine, "helping to fill the country with such stubborn rabble," the government inflicted this severe penalty. They were taken to Sicily and forged to the galleys. A letter dated 16 November 1715 written by the three comrades in suffering, Christian Liebe, Peter Wüthrich, and Joseph Probst, stated that of the five Mennonites, Niklaus Baumgartner had died at Turin and Hans Lüthi on the galleys.
