Sjoerd Hoekstra, a Dutch Mennonite preacher, the son of Jakob Hoekstra, was born 20 January 1805 at Den Helder, and studied at the University and the Mennonite Seminary at Amsterdam. In 1829 he went to Medemblik, and from there in 1835 to Twisk; here he was in active service until his retirement in 1881. He died 1 August 1894.

Hoekstra is known best for his investigations on the principles of Anabaptist life. J. H. Scholten, the well-known professor at Leiden, had previously discussed Anabaptist principles in De leer der Hervormde kerk; this book was refuted by D. S. Gorter, and more extensively by Hoekstra, under the title Nog iets over het eigenlijk wezen van den Doopsgezinden Christen (Hoorn, 1851). He discussed the oath in Doopsgezinde Lektuur II, in an article titled "Het Doopsgezind gevoelen omtrent den eed, opnieuw ter toetse gebragt."
