Jan Hartog b. 1829 at Westzaan, Dutch province of North Holland, d. 1909, became a minister of the Mennonite congregation at Joure in 1853, Zaandam-Oost in 1859, Utrecht in 1861, retired in 1899. He was a popular preacher of the conservative wing of Mennonites and had made extensive studies in the history of preaching, the results of which he published in Geschiedenis van de predikkunde en van de evangelieprediking in de Protestantsche kerk van Nederland (1861). A revised edition appeared in 1887 with the title Geschiedenis van de Predikkunde. It is an excellent work. Aside from his own views he gave a clear picture of the development of preaching and its position in the Protestant Church in the past and present.

Of his innumerable other articles in periodicals, and especially his historical writings dealing chiefly with the 18th century, these should be mentioned: De spectatoriale geschriften uit tweede helft der achttiende eeuw (Utrecht, 1872, 2d ed., 1890), and De Patriotten en Oranje van 1647-1787 (Amsterdam, 1882). His knowledge of the "Patriot" period was very wide and intensive. He was a man of industrious and especially critical scholarly work. The theological school of the University of Utrecht awarded him an honorary degree in 1878.

On Mennonite history Hartog published the following booklets and papers: Levensbericht van Jacob Honig Jzn Jr (Leiden, 1871); Menno Simons, persoon en werk (Utrecht, 1892); "Uit de Broederschap der Doopsgezinden," in Geloof en Vrijheid XXX, No. 12 (Rotterdam, 1896); and in Doopsgezinde Bijdragen he published "Iets van de publieke opinie over de Doopsgezinden in het midden der 18de eeuw" (1867), "Uit de aanteekeningen van Joannes Cuperus" (1868), "De laatste resolutie van den magistraat te Deventer tegen de Doopsgezinden in die stad" (1870), and "De ergernissen van Antje Dirks" (1872).
