Johann Klein was a prominent elder in the Galician Mennonite Church near Lemberg, then Austria-Hungary. He was the last lay preacher in the church and to whom is attributed the survival of the entire Galician group as a Mennonite brotherhood, since the other elder, Jacob Müller (1834-1914, ordained elder in 1883), had withdrawn from active service.

Klein was born in 1836 at Einsiedel, the son of Johann (1814-1875) and Maria Ewy Klein, grandson of Friedrich Klein (1776-1831), who came to Galicia from the Palatinate in 1785. Johann married Christine Müller in 1857; they had 10 children. He started farming in 1864, in 1870 acquired possession of the estate Dobrovlany near Stry, but lived at Kiernica from 1883 on. He was ordained preacher in 1860, and elder in 1877. He died 9 August 1910 at Kiernica.
