Gerhard grew up in Fischau where he eventually became the village teacher. He married Helena Dick (1832-1910) 15 January 1853. In 1874, Gerhard and his family emigrated to Hochstadt, Manitoba.

Gerhard B. Doerksen, a dedicated teacher and father, died following a stroke 15 December 1882.
