Arend van Gelder was a Dutch Mennonite minister, son of Preacher [[Gelder, Hendrik van (1737-1808)|Hendrik van Gelder]] and Maria Smidt, b. 1756 at [[Ouddorp (Zuid-Holland, Netherlands)|Ouddorp]], d. 1798 at Groningen. He was baptized at West-Zaandam in 1783. Having been trained for the ministry by his father, he passed his examination to become a ministerial candidate in 1785 before the board of the Mennonite church of West-Zaandam.
