(See Hoogezand-Sappemeer for the history of the congregation.) In the town of Hoogezand and vicinity Mennonite farmers settled early in the 17th century. In 1711 a number of Swiss Mennonite immigrant families settled at Hoogezand, at nearby Kalkwijk, and about 1721 nine Mennonite families moved from Deventer to Hoogezand.
