Reuben J. Heatwole, born 27 February 1847 and died 7 June 1921, the son of John S. and Nancy Heatwole, was born at [[Rockingham County (Virginia, USA) |Rockingham County, Virginia]]. On 27 February 1873 he married Margaret Kilmer, and was the father of seven children—Henry, Anna, Sarah, Susanna, Mary, Martha, and [[Heatwole, Lydia Magdalena (1887-1932)|Lydia]]. In early manhood he took up a homestead in [[Marion County (Kansas, USA)|Marion County, Kansas]]. In later years he with his family lived in Harvey County, and [[McPherson County (Kansas, USA)|McPherson County]] near Windom, Kansas. He was an outstanding active [[Mennonite Church (MC)|Mennonite Church]] layman on the [[Kansas (USA)|Kansas]] and [[Colorado (USA)|Colorado]] frontier. He taught singing schools, helped organize Sunday schools and churches, served on the [[Mennonite Evangelizing Committee (Mennonite Church) |Evangelizing Committee]], and he assisted many ministers materially in preaching appointments and evangelistic services.
