Jan van Geuns, b. 1764 at Groningen, son of Matthijs (Matthias) van Geuns, studied at the University of Harderwijk in 1780-1789, obtaining his Ph.D. degree on 21 April 1789 on the same day as his brother Steven Jan. Soon afterward appointed ministerial candidate, he served the Mennonite churches of Leiden 1789-1814, and Amsterdam 1814-1829. He seems to have been a man of warm piety and great learning, but of poor eloquence, so that his services, especially in Amsterdam, had low attendance. He died at Nijmegen in 1834. He published a large number of philosophical, historical, and political writings and papers, such as Brief aan het Committé ter regeling van de Grondvergaderingen der Gemeente van Leyden (Leiden, 1795) and Over den Slaavenstand (Leiden, 1797). He generously contributed to the Mennonite hymnbook Uitgezogte Liederen (Leiden, 1810). He was married to Geertruida van Heukelom of Amsterdam. | Jan van Geuns, b. 1764 at Groningen, son of Matthijs (Matthias) van Geuns, studied at the University of Harderwijk in 1780-1789, obtaining his Ph.D. degree on 21 April 1789 on the same day as his brother Steven Jan.
