Roosen. Hamburg in Verlegung desselben. Ratzeburg, Gedruckt bei Sigismund Hoffmann, 1702. This important booklet by the pastor of the Hamburg-Altona (Germany) Mennonite Church, Gerrit Roosen (1612-1711), published by the author in 1702, was reprinted in a second edition in 1753. The Unschuld und Gegen-Bericht section, the first part actually written by the author, covers the first 29 pages, the remaining pages 29-76 constituting translations of three short tracts or sections from Menno Simons' writings. Pages 77-104 contain a brief biography of Menno by Roosen. Two remaining sections of the book, each with separate title page and pagination, contain a confession of faith (40 pp.) written by Roosen, and a sermon (46 pp.) by Roosen. All sections are covered by the general title page and were printed together. The purpose of the book as a whole was to defend the Mennonites from false accusations of Münsterism and heresy, and to prove that the Mennonites are good, pious, and evangelical. The first section, a sketch of the origin of Anabaptism, corrects the history by Sleidanus (Beschreibung geistlicher und weltlicher Sachen, 1547 and many later editions), which asserted that Anabaptism was of Münsterite origin.
