He was saved and baptized in The Evangelical Alliance Mission (TEAM) Christian church in December 1965, then went to Shimonoseki City in Yamaguchi Prefecture as a teacher of economics in the city college in 1969. After that time he was teaching "Economic Policy" as a full professor, having received his PhD in economics in 1985.
In 1970, he met Doyle Book, a Brethren in Christ missionary, and this was the beginning of a close working relationship with the Anabaptists. Together they began a house meeting in the home of the missionary, which later developed into a growing and thriving Japanese church, the Yamanota Christian Church. From its conception, he carried leadership responsibilities. In 1986 he was senior lay pastor. He was also chairman of the Nihon Kirisutokyo Keiteidan (Japan Brethren in Christ Conference) and a representative to the Nihon Menonaito Senkyokai (Japan Mennonite Fellowship).
In 1981 he married Yuko Nagao,a member of the Oita Mennonite church (Nihon Menonaito Kirisutokyo Kyokai Kaigi, General Conference Mennonite). They had two sons. Takanobu Tojo was known for his sense of humor, scholarly approach to the Scriptures, training of lay leaders, and evangelism of young men from his university contacts.
