The Gospel Mission in Pinckney, Michigan, emerged when a Mennonite woman, Laura Shirey, and former members of a local Congregational Church built a basement church in Pinckney in 1929. In 1941 they turned the property over to the Indiana-Michigan Mennonite Mission Board.

The Mission Board ordained Ezra Beachy as pastor of the new congregation on 5 October 1941. By 1948, the congregation expanded the basement and erected a sanctuary above it, though it did not dedicate the building until 29 May 1949. In 1948, it used the name Calvary Mennonite Church.

The congregation suffered when a core of members who lived in Ann Arbor launched the Ann Arbor Mennonite Church in 1966.

In 1980, the congregation changed its name to Good News Community Chapel in response to the local community's misconceptions about Mennonites.
