Tshinmayo Katoko (Jean) was born to Chief Tshenda and his wife Namevadi in the Belgian Congo (Democratic Republic of Congo). He attended the Shambungu Baptist mission school in 1931 and the next year accepted Christ. From 1934 to 1935 he worked as a cook in a missionary's home. He was married in 1935 to Thumba and together they had several children. After completing primary school Tshinyama taught at Tshenda and later (until 1940) served as a preacher-evangelist at Tambwe.
In 1941 Tshinyama began nurses training at the Vanga Baptist Station and after completion of the training he worked in Iwungu, Nkara, and Kajiji. In the latter place he also preached to the patients as well as working as a nurse. After 1956 until his death on 16 September 1987 he worked full-time as hospital evangelist at the Kajiji Mennonite Brethren Hospital.
