Tijs van Lind(t) (Thijs de Lind, Thys Hille, Thijs op den Berch, real name Thijs van Lin), an Anabaptist martyr, a pious man who was held in high regard for his benevolence to the poor. Since he could not be persuaded to recant even by the use of torture, he was sentenced to death and burned at the stake at Roermond, then belonging to the duchy of Geldern, now in the Dutch province of Limburg, in July 1551 (not 1550, as van Braght erroneously stated). Van Braght's account in the Martyrs' Mirror relates that "shortly after the burning of the pious witness of Jesus Christ" a severe fire broke out in Roermond, which many thought was "a punishment for the innocent blood." This fire did not, however, strike until 16 July 1554.
