The Spencer Mennonite Church near Spencer, Wisconsin, was formed in 1973 as an unaffiliated Mennonite congregation. Harold Overholt was ordained in 1974 as the first minister for the group.
In 1986 the Spencer building was bought by the State of Wisconsin as part of a highway improvement project. The congregation purchased land in nearby rural Stratford and erected a new meetinghouse under the name, Bethany Mennonite Church. The first service was held in the new building in August 1986.
