Johann M. "J. M." Elias: church and conference worker; born 30 December 1873 (10 January 1874 New Style) in Kronsthal, Chortitza Mennonite Settlement, South Russia. Johann was the fourth of seven children of Johann P. Elias (5 June 1837, South Russia - 1 August 1910, Greenfarm, Saskatchewan, Canada) and Maria (Dyck) Elias (13 February 1840, Kronsthal, Chortitza, South Russia - 21 October 1913, Greenfarm, Saskatchewan). Johann married Maria Braun (10 August 1874, Einlage, Chortitza, South Russia - 7 November 1963, Winkler, Manitoba, Canada), daughter of Dietrich Braun (b. 1845) and Maria (Penner) Braun (1848-1894) on 27 December 1896 in Ebenfeld, South Russia, and they had nine children. Elias died 7 April 1941 in Winkler, Manitoba, where he was buried.

Johann was baptized and joined the Mennonite Brethren Church in Ebenfeld, South Russia in 1894. Johann and Maria immigrated to Canada in 1901, settling on a farm near Winkler, Manitoba. Elias was active in the Winkler Mennonite Brethren Church as a Sunday school teacher and working with the youth. He was ordained as a deacon in 1919 and served as Assistant Leader of the church for many years.

Elias served as Treasurer of the Board of Foreign Missions for Canada for several years, and also served the Northern District (now Canadian) Conference of the Mennonite Brethren Church as Secretary from 1930 until 1932.
