Mattheus Keuse (Kuese), an [[Anabaptism|Anabaptist]] martyr, was born at Roesselare, Flanders, and at the time of his death was a tailor, 31 years of age. Mattheus Keuse (Kuese), an Anabaptist martyr, was born at Roesselare, Flanders, and at the time of his death was a tailor, 31 years of age. In 1567 he left the town of Ghent in Belgium because of fear of persecution, since his child had not been baptized. After a stay in the Netherlands, leaving his family behind at Dordrecht, he returned to Flanders, but on his way to Ghent he was apprehended at Bruges. Here, remaining loyal to his Lord, he was burned at the stake on 7 August 1573 (not 1574 as is stated in Martyrs Mirror).
