Jan Hendrik Maronier (b. 1827 at Rotterdam, d. 1920) was a Remonstrant preacher successively at Zevenaar, Leiden, Utrecht, and Rotterdam. He wrote an excellent biography of the Remonstrant Jacobus Arminius, ]akob Arminius (Amsterdam, 1905), and Geschiedenis van het Protestantisme . . . 1648-1789 (Leiden, 1907), besides a number of smaller works including some opposing the Roman Catholic Church, and of particular interest, Het inwendig Woord (Amsterdam, 1890), which treats Hans Denck and the Mennonites of Holland. "Menno Simons did not know the doctrine of the inner word, nor did Dirk Philips." Hans de Ries acknowledges in addition to the Scriptures "another unwritten Word of God." With the exception of Nittert Obbesz there is no trace of opposition to the doctrine of the inner word, states Maronier (page 221).
