Herman Broese van Groenou, b. 19 February 1822 at [[Kampen (Overijssel, Netherlands)|Kampen]], was a son of Jacobus Adolf Broese and Geertruide van Groenou. He studied at the University of [[Utrecht (Utrecht, Netherlands)|Utrecht]] and the [[Amsterdam Mennonite Theological Seminary (Kweekschool)|Amsterdam Mennonite Seminary]] and in 1847 became preacher at [[Medemblik (Noord-Holland, Netherlands)|Medemblik]]; in 1852 he went to [[Aardenburg (Zeeland, Netherlands)|Aardenburg]].
