Jakob was the brother of [[Wiebe, Philipp (1816-1870)|Philipp Wiebe]], was a teacher of the [[Halbstadt Zentralschule (Halbstadt, Molotschna Mennonite Settlement, Zaporizhia Oblast, Ukraine)|Halbstadt Zentralschule]] in the [[Molotschna Mennonite Settlement (Zaporizhia Oblast, Ukraine)|Molotschna Mennonite settlement]], Russia, and became the first elder of the [[Karassan Mennonite Church (Simferopol, Crimea, Ukraine)|Karassan Mennonite Church]] when the church was organized in 1862.
