Verwer, a Mennonite family name, found at Zaandam, Amsterdam, Rotterdam, Alkmaar, Graftdijk, and some other congregations in the Dutch province of North Holland (several apparently unrelated branches). Aris Jansz Verwer, d. 1679, was a preacher of the Frisian congregation at Zaandam-West and from about 1649 of the Aris-Janszvolk, a group which had separated from the Zaandam-West Frisian church, and which was dissolved shortly after the death of Aris Jansz. The cause of the schism is not clear.
In the Rotterdam branch there was Adriaan Verwer, a merchant, who later moved to Amsterdam. He was a fervent Collegiant, a friend of Joachim Oudaen, and the author of a book against the philosopher Spinoza: De Atheisterye het Mom-aanzigt afgerukt (1683); he also wrote Inleiding tot de Christelyke Godsgeleerdheid (Amsterdam, 1698) and books on the Dutch language (1707) and on the Dutch maritime law (1716, 1730). In Amsterdam (Lamist) and elsewhere some Verwers were deacons.
