De Verwer, a Dutch Mennonite family name, found at Zaandam and Amsterdam. Abraham de Verwer, b. before 1600, d. August 1650, a member of the Amsterdam Waterlander congregation, was a painter, particularly of naval combats. Two of his works, a naval combat and a view of a sailship, are found at the Amsterdam Rijksmuseum. His drawings have greater merit than his canvasses. In 1639-1641 he was in Paris, where he painted and sketched some views of the town. His son Justus de Verwer (ca. 1626-ca. 1686), first living at Amsterdam, later at Gouda, of whom it is not known that he was a member of the church, was also a painter.

Jacob de Verwer (1829-1871) of Zaandam was trained for the ministry at the Amsterdam Mennonite Seminary and served as pastor at Baard 1854-1856 and De Rijp 1856-d. 1871.
