Adriaen Backer, married to Elsje Colijn, was a member of the Waterlander Mennonite congregation at Amsterdam. He was a Dutch painter, a pupil of his uncle Jacob Adriaensz Backer. For a time he stayed in Rome (1666); upon his return he introduced the baroque style into Holland by imitating Italian masters. The Rijksmuseum at Amsterdam contained four of his paintings in the 1950s.
