Stoffel (Stoffels), a Dutch Mennonite family, for merly at Zaandam, where Gerrit Stoffels was a member of the Old Frisian congregation in 1628, as was his son Pieter Stoffels, a shipbuilder; Jan Stoffelsz, probably Gerrit's grandson, was from 1683 a preacher of the Zaandam Oude Huys (Frisian) congregation. The Stoffels mentioned in the church books as members of the Zaandam Nieuwe Huys congregation may have been descendants. Most members of this family were blacksmiths and carpenters at Zaandam, and later on millwrights, the last of whom was Cornelis Pietersz Stoffel (1776-1836). His son Pieter Corneliszn Stoffel (1818-69) moved to Deventer, where he founded a lumber business. He and some of his descendants were trustees of the Deventer Mennonite Church; his son Pieter Stoffel (1848-1942) was president of the church board. Other sons of Pieter Corneliszn were Willem Stoffel (1859-1945), a lumber dealer and moderator of the Deventer church board, and Cornelis Stoffel (1845-1908), professor of English and Swedish at Amsterdam, later living at Nijmegen, a deacon at Amsterdam and Nijmegen.
