Bettendorf, a noble family in Kraichgau in Baden, Germany, had possessions in Mauer and Gau-Angelloch, on which Mennonites found reception as tenants after their expulsion from the canton of Bern (Switzerland). In the middle of the 19th century through the marriage of Baroness Juliana Friederike of Gau-Angelloch with Johannes Friedrich von Zyllnhardt, Palatine captain and commander at Dillsburg, the possessions passed to the von Zyllnhardt family. The latter also owned Schatthausen, where there was a Mennonite congregation in the 18th century (Baiertal, Nekrolog der Deutschen VI, 1828, Part II, 517). In 1742 Eleonore Charlotte van Bettendorf took a warm interest in the Mennonites living on her estates in Altwiesloch, as evidenced in a petition to the Palatine elector (records in the Karlsruhe General Archives).
