The van Laers were an aristocratic Dutch Mennonite family of businessmen. Jan van Laer, a deacon in the Flemish congregation of Amsterdam, was excommunicated in 1623 by the Flemish Elder Jan Luies, because van Laer did not agree with his strict ideas. Willem van Laer, originally from Amsterdam, then living at Hamburg, Germany, married Levina Coppenol (about 1700) of Amsterdam. Their son Cornelis van Laer of Amsterdam in 1746 joined the Moravian Brethren in the Netherlands and became treasurer of their Mission Association. Some of the van Laer family were deacons at Amsterdam. A side branch of this family has the name Blok (Block) van Laer. There are some descendants in the United States who spell their name Black van Lear.
