Jan van den Honert (son of Taco Hajo van den Honert, who was a Reformed preacher and a professor of theology at the University of Leiden), was a Dutch Reformed clergyman 1719-1727 at Katwijk, Enkhuizen, and Haarlem, then professor of theology at the University of Utrecht 1727-1734 and the University of Leiden 1734-1758, achieved some importance for the Mennonites of Holland through the pen war he carried on (1740-1742) with Johannes Stinstra against Stinstra's defense of religious freedom. Van den Honert charged Stinstra with Socinianism, and Stinstra repudiated the charge. It was certainly the work of van den Honert that the government of Friesland on 13 January 1742 suspended Stinstra from service and suppressed his book, Natuur en gesteldheid van Christus koningrijk. With all respect for the scholarship of men like Hoornbeek and van den Honert, the impression remains that witch-hunting and tracking down unorthodox Socinian views among Mennonites became second nature to them.
