Jakob Hochrütiner, the son of Lorenz Hochrütiner, came to Bern, Switzerland, with other Anabaptists in the spring of 1527, and was expelled under oath from city and canton. Because he refused the oath he was placed on the pillory and led out (1 May 1527). Soon he was back in the city. At the petition of his wife his life was spared, "if from prison he leaves the city and canton, or he will be executed without mercy."
