Pieter Cornelisz was preacher of the Reformed Church at Alkmaar (Holland), opponent of Hans de Ries, with whom he disputed for two days in 1592 on infant baptism in the house of Arent Claesz. On 10 August 1591 he had sent a compilation of 26 arguments proving that it is a Christian's duty to bear government office, to Jacob Jansz Scheedemaker, the co-elder of Hans de Ries. Aided by de Ries, Scheedemaker presented a refutation on 21 September 1594, Nootwendige Verantwoordinge. When these booklets were published against the wish of Cornelisz, he published a reply in 1597, Grondige Wederlegginghe, etc., which closed the argument.
