Kornelius van Huyzen, born 24 August 1667, died 28 January 1721 at Emden, was a preacher of the Mennonite church at Emden in East Friesland from 1701, elder from 1702 to his death in 1721. Van Huyzen was an advocate of audible prayer by the minister (stemmelijk gebed), and defended the thesis that the Mennonites are descended from the Waldenses. One of his numerous works was titled Historische Verhandeling van de opkomst en voortgang, mitgaders de Godgeleerdheijd der Doopsgezinde Christenen (2 volumes, Emden-Hamburg, 1712); second edition with foreword by W. Houttuyn (Hoorn, 1734), a work which in a number of respects has value for the study of Mennonite history. It was thought that the book reflected Spinoza's views, giving rise to an unedifying pen-war, of which some writings are still extant. He was especially attacked by Harmen Reynskes van Overwijk, a Mennonite preacher at Amsterdam, to whom he replied with Toetz-steen van de Leere der Doopsgezinden (Amsterdam, 1713) and De Grondslag van de Leere der Doopsgesinden (Amsterdam, 1715). Besides this he published Korte inhoud van de Leere des Geloofs. Geschikt nae de Algemeene Belijdenissen van de Doopsgesinde Christenen (Amsterdam, 1705) and two sermons: Ezechiels gehoorzaamheid (Emden, 1702) and Paulus Beede, the sermon preached when he was ordained as an elder (Amsterdam, 1703).
