The Meeting Place began services in 1991. The congregation began meeting in a storefront at Broadway Avenue and Maryland Street in downtown Winnipeg. The first building was occupied in December 1992. Paul Wartman was the first leading minister of the congregation. The church originated as an effort of local Mennonite Brethren congregations and the Manitoba Board of Missions and Church Extension.
The Meeting Place emphasized a more contemporary worship style at the time of its formation. The average weekly attendance was around 2,200 by the late 1990s, although attendance in 2012 was lower at around 800.
