Pauwel, an elder of the Frisian Mennonite congregation of Danzig, West Prussia, is mentioned in two letters by Elder Jan Gerrits, written to the Dutch Waterlander Elder Hans de Ries in 1612. By the time of the second of these letters, undated, Pauwel had apparently died. The letter says he is said to have been an excellent leader under whose influence the congregation became prosperous, peaceable, able, and tolerant. The first letter, dated 25 August, mentions the death of Elder Simon Martensz and a severe illness of Elder Paulus Bussemaker. If the Pauwel of the second letter is identical with Paulus Bussemaker, which seems to be the case, the article Bussemaker must include the fact that Bussemaker, having been excommunicated by the Flemish, joined the Frisian congregation at Danzig, and served among them as an elder until his death in 1612.
