This picture, first edited by Petrus Grooten, was widely accepted among the Mennonites. Jacobus Burghart, a German engraver, who is supposed to have lived during the second half of the 17th century in East Friesland and of whom nothing more is known, engraved a portrait of Menno Simons in 1683 (known as the Hamburg-Altona portrait). This picture, first edited by Petrus Grooten, was widely accepted among the Mennonites. In 1889 the congregation of Hamburg-Altona procured a new edition (Kunstverlag Hermann Braams, Norden-Norderney).
