Pieter Coerten (Coerte, Courte), a cloth shearer, born at Meenen, Flanders, living at Antwerp and later at Gent, an Anabaptist martyr, was burned at the stake with three others on 5 July 1559, on the Vrijdagsmarkt at Gent, Belgium; on 7 August of that year seven more suffered martyrdom. All were members of the Gent congregation and had been seized on Friday after Pentecost, as Hans de Vette relates in his letter, who also gives the names of these eleven martyrs. They all remained steadfast. Their names are commemorated in the hymn "Ick moet een liet beginnen" (I must begin a song), found in the Lietboecxken.
