Bussemaker has been a Dutch Mennonite family since the 16th century. Most of its members lived at Borne and Deventer, where some of them served as deacons. B. Barlage Bussemaker served for many years as a treasurer of the Zwolsche Weduwfonds. Hendrik Bussemaker (1881-1925), of Deventer, educated at the Amsterdam university and seminary, served as pastor at Hoorn on the island of Texel 1909-1915, Zijldijk 1915-24, and Hindeloopen 1924-1925. Paulus Bussemaker was apparently not related to the Borne-Deventer Bussemaker family. He was likely identical with Elder Pauwel at Danzig, who served until d. 1612. Having been excommunicated by the Flemish, he joined the Danzig Frisian congregation.
