Frans de Kuyper (Cuypers) was born about 1629. He became a Remonstrant preacher at Vlaardingen, Dutch province of South Holland, in 1652, but resigned in 1653, because he did not agree with infant baptism. He moved to Amsterdam and later to Rotterdam and became a book printer. Among the most important publications by Kuyper are Bibliotheca Fratrum Polonorum, quos unitarios vocant, i.e., the Socinians. In the Dutch Collegiant movement Kuyper was a prominent member, though his stubbornness caused discord with many of them, especially with Joannes Breedenburg, whom he accused of Spinozism. Through his adherence to the philosophical principles of Spinoza he had a wide influence on the growing liberalism of his time. In the Collegiant movement he met with numerous Mennonites; he had some sympathy for Mennonite principles, especially for nonresistance; the booklet De recht weerelooze Christen of verdeediging van het gevoelen der eerste Christenen en gemartelde Doops-gezinden, published by Kuyper (Rotterdam, 1678), however, was not written by him, as has sometimes been supposed, but by Joan Hartigveldt. De Kuyper published Broederlijke Onderhandeling van de Waterdoop tusschen Klaas Stapel en Frans Kuyper (Rotterdam, 1680), and is supposed to be the author of Den Philosopheerende Boer (1676). De Kuyper died in 1691.
