De Monchy is a Dutch family of French Protestant descent, which about 1650 moved to the Netherlands as military officers, settling at Gouda. Many members of this family, from about 1740 living at Rotterdam, Holland, were Mennonites. The first de Monchys in Rotterdam were brewers and distillers; after about 1800 they were mostly engaged in trading, banking, and the directorate of the Holland-America Line. Two of them were noted physicians of Rotterdam. S. J. R. de Monchy (born 1880 at Rotterdam), also a Mennonite, was burgomaster of Arnhem 1921-1934 and of The Hague 1934-1950. Marius Jacobus de Monchy, born 1909 at Rotterdam, a musician and composer, was an organist in the Rotterdam Mennonite Church. The following members of this family served in the Rotterdam Mennonite church council: Engel Pieter de Monchy I (1793-1883), a merchant, later president of the Nederlandsche Handel-Maatschappij (Dutch Trading Co.), a member of the First Chamber of the States-General, who also was a trustee of the Algemene Doopsgezinde Sociëteit (Dutch Mennonite General Conference); then Michiel Marinus de Monchy (1820-1898), a merchant, thereupon president of the Rotterdam Bank, Salomon Jean Rene de Monchy (1824-1917), director of a trading company, Engel Pieter de Monchy II (1836-1919), a broker, all three sons of Engel Pieter de Monchy I, Salomon Jean Rene de Monchy II (1863-1930), a merchant, and Henri Gerard Jean de Monchy (1882- ), son of Engel Pieter de Monchy II, director of a trading company.
