Marie Kerckhoffs, an Anabaptist martyr, burned at the stake on 27 July 1573, on the Houtmarkt at Maastricht, Dutch province of Limburg. Marie was a native of Maastricht and lived there; she was about 30 years of age and the mother of four children. She had been (re) baptized in a house at Maastricht by Henrick Kroch (see Knifft) from Germany together with some others, whose names she refused to tell. Even in severe torture she gave no further information. Marie was typical of the loyal Mennonite martyrs; she refused to be comforted by Catholic priests, saying that she "desired to live and die in her faith"; and that sins could only be forgiven by God, but not by priests; for this reason she did not attach importance to the Catholic sacrament of confession. She also held a low opinion of the Mass. Quietly and faithfully she spoke about her faith, and steadfastly suffered martyrdom.
