Eggiwil (Eggiwyl), a village in the [[Bern (Switzerland)|canton of Bern]], [[Switzerland|Switzerland]], in the 17th century the seat of an [[Anabaptism|Anabaptist]] congregation of 40 members. Eggiwil (Eggiwyl), a village in the canton of Bern, Switzerland, in the 17th century the seat of an Anabaptist congregation of 40 members. They were to be put into the prison in Bern and from there sent out of Switzerland. The village community refused to permit this, and had to send 12 of their most well-to-do men as hostages to Bern, to be kept there at the expense of the village until the order from Bern was obeyed. On 16 October 1671 the Reformed pastor of the village was able to report that the Anabaptists had left of their own accord. They probably settled in Alsace or in the Palatinate, Germany.
