Hermann A. Lenzmann was born 19 December 1847 in Gnadenfeld, Molotschna Mennonite Settlement, South Russia, the son of August Lenzmann (1823-1877) and Henriette Emilie (Preuss) Lenzmann (1827-1897). He married Helene Franz (10 October 1852, Neuhof, Molotschna, South Russia - 6 March 1920), daughter of Heinrich Simon Franz (1812-1889) and Agatha (Suderman) Franz (1818-1882). Hermann died on 3 November 1924.
Hermann was an outstanding educator and printer. He received his secondary education under Heinrich Franz, whose daughter he married, taught elementary school at Berdyansk, and attended the Theological Seminary at Barmen, Germany, in 1868-1872, after which he spent some time at the Normal School of Neuwied. In 1873-1881, with the exception of 1875, he taught at the Gnadenfeld Zentralschule. In 1875 Lenzmann studied at the University of Tübingen under J. T. Beck. During the years 1881-1898 he taught at the Halbstadt Zentralschule. For 1898-1907 he returned to the Gnadenfeld Zentralschule.
In 1907 Lenzmann established a printing press at Gross-Tokmak, Molotschna, where numerous Mennonite books were published. The first issues of Mennonitisches Jahrbuch (1903-1906) were printed and published by Lenzmann. In the issue of 1903-04 he published an appeal for support of the Jahrbuch. During the following years (1904-05 and 1906-07) he presented a lengthy biography of Johann Tobias Beck in the Jahrbuch. Görz says of him that he was "one of our best educated teachers" (p. 163).
