Zahler, Melchior, an [[Anabaptism|Anabaptist]] deacon in Frutigen in the [[Bern (Switzerland)|Swiss canton of Bern]], was in 1710 imprisoned for three weeks in Bern on account of his faith. He then betook himself with his youngest children into the Neuenburg region. On the occasion of a visit to his older children in his home town, he fell into the hands of the persecuting authorities and was again put into the prison in Bern. With 60 other Anabaptists he was to have been sent to America on 18 March 1710. In [[Nijmegen (Gelderland, Netherlands)|Nijmegen]] they acquired their freedom. With [[Brechbill, Benedikt (1665-ca. 1720)|Benedikt Brechbühl]] and [[Bürky, Hans (17th/18th century)|Hans Bürky]], Zahler was sent to [[Amsterdam (Noord-Holland, Netherlands)|Amsterdam]], to present to the city council a written account of their imprisonment and a confession of faith. Zahler returned to his Swiss home and was seized again and threatened with life imprisonment.
