Schellinger, a Mennonite family, now extinct, found at [[Amsterdam (Noord-Holland, Netherlands)|Amsterdam]], Holland, in the 17th and 18th centuries; they were usually ironmongers and in the 18th century came to great prosperity. Some members of this family belonged to the Old Frisian (Arke Noach) Mennonites at Amsterdam, among whom was Abraham Pieters Schellinger, who was a preacher of this church 1718-d.66. Members of the family were found in the Jan-Jacobsz, [[Lamists|Lamist]], [[Zonists|Zonist]], and (in the 17th century) [[Waterlanders|Waterlander]] congregations. A few members of this family were warmly interested in the Herrnhuter ([[Moravian Church|Moravian]]) Brotherhood and some joined them at Zeist, as did Jacob Schellinger (b. 1706) and his brother Cornelis. Both were members of the Amsterdam Lamist church and were won over to the Herrnhuters by Johannes Deknatel, the Lamist minister, who was a warm friend of the Herrnhuters. Jacob married Magdalena Beuning, and Cornelis married Sophia Centen; both women were Mennonites. In 1736 Jacob Schellinger provided the money for the purchase of a tract of land near [[IJsselstein (Utrecht, Netherlands)|IJsselstein]] in the Dutch province of [[Utrecht (Netherlands)|Utrecht]], where a suitable building was then erected for the Herrnhuter colony, which was named 's Heerendyk. In 1745, 's Heerendyk having become too small, Cornelis Schellinger bought a manor with a large area of land at Zeist near [[Utrecht (Utrecht, Netherlands)|Utrecht]] (for 155,000 guilders). He also contributed generously to the furnishing of the manor at Zeist, to which the Brethren now moved from 's Heerendyk. Cornelis Schellinger and his family lived for a number of years in a wing of this castle; Jacob Schellinger and other families lived here temporarily. [[Zinzendorf, Count Nicholas Ludwig von (1700-1760)|Count Zinzendorf]] also lived there for some time; his eldest daughter was married in the castle chapel, which had also been built largely by Cornelis Schellinger's contributions. About 1749 discord arose between Cornelis Schellinger and Count Zinzendorf. In 1752 the former was involved in the financial difficulties of the Herrnhuter group; in 1767 after some disappointment he sold the castle and most of the other property to Count von Dohna, Zinzendorfs son-in-law, and left Zeist, without, however, entirely leaving the Herrnhuters.
