The Mennonite Boys League, an organization for boys 9 to 14 years old of the [[General Conference Mennonite Church (GCM)|General Conference Mennonite Church]], came into existence through appointment in 1954 of a Boys Work Committee by [[Mennonite Men (General Conference Mennonite)|Mennonite Men]], the Conference Laymen's organization. The members of this committee were Erwin C. Goering, Clinton Kaufman, and [[Schrag, Menno (1904-1987)|Menno Schrag]]. The League began to function in August 1955 when the first unit of some 25 boys was established in the [[First Mennonite Church (Newton, Kansas, USA)|First Mennonite Church]] of [[Newton (Kansas, USA)|Newton]], [[Kansas (USA)|Kansas]]. Other units soon followed in [[Pennsylvania (USA)|Pennsylvania]] and Indiana—with manifest interest throughout the conference. The purpose of the League was "to carry out an intensive program of wholesome activities geared to the interest of young boys; to lead boys into a saving relationship with Christ; to foster consistent Christian living, and instill the Mennonite faith as founded on the Word of God."
