'']] The Kingdom of Lesotho, is a small (11,720 sq. mi.; 30,354 sq. km.) mountainous, independent nation in southern Africa, surrounded by the [[South Africa, Republic of|Republic of South Africa]]. Its population of ca. 1.4 million (1989), 1.87 million (2005) lives from an economy based on livestock, subsistence agriculture, small industry, water exports and migrant labor in the Republic of South Africa. [[Mennonite Central Committee (International)|Mennonite Central Committee]] (MCC) first began work in Lesotho in early 1973, placing teachers and development workers in various assignments. As of November 1986, MCC had 17 workers involved in teaching, community development, health and social services.

Africa Inter-Mennonite Mission (AIMM) also began working in Lesotho in 1973. Its staff has numbered from four to ten persons since that time. The primary ministry of AIMM is among the [[African Independent Churches|African Independent Churches]] through Bible teaching and leadership training. Other assignments have included university chaplaincy and pastoral leadership in a multiracial international context.
